‘Ai Pono, Hawaii’s longest-running eating disorder treatment program, brings over 35 years of experience in supporting individuals ages 13 and older. The center offers residential treatment for women and girls, partial hospitalization (PHP), and in-person intensive outpatient programming (IOP), along with a virtual IOP option for residents of Hawaii. A Serene Maui Setting for Healing Located on the beautiful island of Maui, ‘Ai Pono is housed in a traditional Japanese-style home that fosters calm and tranquility. Vaulted ceilings and an open floor plan fill the space with natural light, creating a soothing environment for recovery. The facility’s prime location allows clients to participate in enriching off-site excursions, including visits to local beaches, cultural sites like Iao Valley, the Kula lavender farm, and nearby shopping destinations. Mindful walks to the nearby beach are a regular part of the daily routine. Holistic Approach to Eating Disorder Recovery ‘Ai Pono focuses on the connection between food and eating disorders, treating maladaptive eating behaviors as symptoms while addressing underlying issues. Co-occurring conditions such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and body dysmorphia are also treated to ensure comprehensive healing. Personalized Residential Care for Women The women’s residential program includes three weekly psychotherapy sessions and daily psychoeducational groups. Family involvement is encouraged and supported by experienced clinicians as outlined in the individualized treatment plan. Meals and snacks are considered therapeutic sessions, tailored to each client’s dietary needs and reviewed weekly with a Registered Dietitian who provides nutritional counseling. Flexible Virtual IOP for All Genders ‘Ai Pono’s virtual IOP supports individuals ages 13 and older of all genders, offering flexible scheduling and frequency of sessions depending on each client’s stage in recovery. Comprehensive Therapeutic Modalities Clients at ‘Ai Pono benefit from a variety of evidence-based and holistic therapies, including dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), internal family systems (IFS), trauma-informed care, eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), and somatic therapy. Holistic practices such as gentle yoga, mindfulness, sound therapy, and nature-based therapies further enhance the mind-body healing experience, providing a well-rounded and supportive path to recovery.
